Writing a Developed and Detailed Conclusion

It is significant to have a strong conclusion, since this is the last chance you have to make an impression on your reader. The aim of your conclusion isn’t to introduce any fresh ideas, but to sum up everything you’ve written. Specifically, your conclusion should accomplish three major goals:

  • Restate the main idea of your essay, or your thesis statement
  • Summarize the three subpoints of your essay
  • Leave the reader with an interesting final impression

The paragraph below is an example conclusion. As you read, think about what each sentence accomplishes within the paragraph. What sentence(s) restates the essay’s thesis statement? What sentence(s) summarizes the essay’s three subpoints? What sentence(s) leaves the reader with an interesting final impression?

Getting a better job is a aim that I would indeed like to accomplish in the next few years. Completing school will take me a long way to meeting this objective. To meet my aim, I will also prepare my résumé and search for jobs. My objective may not be an effortless one to achieve, but things that are worth doing are often not effortless.

Notice that the very first sentence restates the thesis. The 2nd and third sentences summarize the essay’s subpoints. Eventually, the fourth sentence leaves the reader with an interesting final impression.

No fresh information is introduced in this paragraph. Instead, the writer sums up what has been written so far and leaves the reader with a last thought. While the content of the paragraph is very similar to the introduction, the paragraph itself is not exactly the same. This is significant. Even however the purpose of the conclusion is to restate a lot of the information from the introduction, it should sound different because the conclusion’s purpose is slightly different from the introduction.

Practice writing a conclusion using the sample essay topic and the thesis statement. Reminisce to support the points you have gathered. Reminisce to restate your thesis, summarize your subpoints, and leave the reader with an interesting final impression.

Italics and Underlining

Italics and underlining generally serve similar purposes. However, the context for their use is different. When handwriting a document–or in other situations where italics aren’t an option–use underlining. When you are word processing a document on a computer, use italics. The significant thing is to stay consistent in how you use italics and underlining.

Italicize the titles of magazines, books, newspapers, academic journals, films, television shows, long poems, plays, operas, musical albums, works of art, websites.

  • I read a truly interesting article in Newsweek while I was waiting at the doctor’s office.
  • My cousin is reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer for two different classes.
  • I have every album from Dave Matthews Band, except for Crash .
  • Quotation Marks and Italics/Underlining Exercise

    In the following sentences put in quotation marks wherever they are needed, and underline words where italics are needed.

    1. Mary is attempting hard in school this semester, her father said.
    Two. No, the taxi driver said curtly, I cannot get you to the airport in fifteen minutes.
    Three. I believe, Jack remarked, that the best time of year to visit Europe is in the spring. At least that’s what I read in a book entitled Guide to Europe.
    Four. My French professor told me that my accent is abominable.
    Five. She asked, Is Time a magazine you read regularly?
    6. Flannery O’Connor most likely got the title of one of her stories from the words of the old popular song, A Good Man Is Hard to Find.
    7. When did Roosevelt say, We have nothing to fear but fear itself?
    8. It seems to me that hip and cool are words that are going out of style.
    9. Yesterday, John said, This afternoon I’ll bring back your book Conflict in the Middle East; however, he did not comeback it.
    Ten. Can you believe, Dot asked me, that it has been almost five years since we’ve seen each other?
    11. A Ideal Day for Bananafish is, I believe, J. D. Salinger’s best brief story.
    12. Certainly, Mr. Martin said, I shall explain the entire situation to him. I know that he will understand.

    Punctuation Exercise

    Put in semicolons, colons, dashes, quotation marks, Italics (use an underline), and parentheses where ever they are needed in the following sentences.

    1. The boys in question Harold Keene, Jim Peterson, and Gerald Greene deserve awards.
    Two. Several countries participated in the airlift Italy, Belgium, France, and Luxembourg.

    11. When the teacher commented that her spelling was poor, Lynn replied All the members of my family are poor spellers. Why not me?
    12. He used the phrase you know so often that I eventually said No, I don’t know.
    13. The automobile dealer treated three makes of cars Volkswagens, Porsches, and Mercedes Benz.
    14. However Phil said he would arrive on the 9 Nineteen flight, he came instead on the Ten 36 flight.
    15. Whoever thought said Helen that Jack would be elected class president?
    16. In baseball a showcase boat is a man who shows off.
    17. The minister quoted Isaiah Five 21 in last Sunday’s sermon.
    Legal. There was a very interesting article entitled The Fresh Rage for Folk Singing in last Sunday’s Fresh York Times newspaper.
    Nineteen. Whoever is elected secretary of the club Ashley, or Chandra, or Aisha must be ready to do a excellent deal of work, said Jumita, the previous secretary.
    20. Darwin’s On the Origin of Species 1859 caused a excellent controversy when it appeared.
